The game wouldn't be enjoyable if it was a cakewalk. I have every confidence that the dev team will get there, they've already given us an amazing game. The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

But Gunfire Reborn, even in its early state, feels like a smooth distillation of all those pungent ingredients.

Like I stated previously, I've cleared Nightmare many times, both solo and in a group. Edit: sanguine relic has always been bad to me without specific other scrolls to undermine its downside. Credits and distribution permission.

Nightmare is supposed to be hard I 100% agree but I would go as far to say that at least 75% of my nightmare runs feel impossible by the 3rd stage of act 1 just because of scrolls/weapons. You hold your breath and hope that the merchant at the boss will offer you a scroll or two as a last ditch effort, and then you get either zero scrolls even after the re-roll, or he gives you Against the Flow. Tools that players rely on in prior difficulties don't work as well in Nightmare. I know from experience as a software developer that I can engineer what I feel to be the best solution to a problem, but it falls apart without user feedback and testing with real world scenarios.

The builds start shining and being diverse in act 3. When we take into account the already heavily skewed RNG for obtaining scrolls, things that worked somewhat, or even great in lower difficulties are a waste of a drop in Nightmare. I don't know how much the health scales and a four-player game but in my usual two/three-player games we don't have to kite the arsonist because I can just leap on it and kill it with a shotgun fairly quickly with a few decent ascendancies. The steps between the tiers are very small but they accumulate to be quite difficult because they stack.

The big change is to meet mobs with more resistance, traps in normal areas and a higher probability of spawning elites without being in the vault. The situation we're seeing now is diminishing returns for skillful play, and punishing us for being at the receiving end of RNG and some bad scaling. I think maybe we're just playing the game very differently and I'm having much more success with arsonist because of it.

The third chapter isn't really that difficult, especially if you get -90% damage scroll. It's also possible that with more weapons/inscriptions/scrolls the balance will work itself out eventually. I love a good difficulty, and play Nightmare a few runs every other night, but spending forever just plinking away at enemy shields only to see them recharge while you scramble for ammo can feel bad.

You generally get a feel by the end of the second level in act 1 based on how punishing the RNG has been thus far. Combine this with many enemies doing 50-75% of your health in a single shot, and you can have a lot of otherwise good runs that turn into bashing your head against a wall. That way you can at least plan on getting x many scrolls. And in a way I got surprised when the act 3 boss died because it didn’t feel like the end. Most of it was way harder than the actual game and end boss. This is something that I've seen hit people hard when starting Nightmare.
